In my opinion, the Casio SXC-1 is probably one of the most interesting little samplers released in 2026, except that, at the time of writing this article, it's still officially a Japan-only product.
Casio showed a prototype of the SXC-1 at NAMM 2026, before officially announcing it in April and releasing it in Japan later in May. From what I've seen so far, and based on the relatively little content currently available online, the idea behind this machine is simple: it's a compact standalone sampler aimed at making beatmaking fun, portable and accessible to everybody.
Casio describes the philosophy behind the SXC-1 as the "democratization" of music creation — making sampling and beatmaking something almost anyone can pick up and enjoy. Unfortunately, we're all still waiting for news about an international release.
I pulled the trigger and purchased mine in June directly from a Japanese dealer on eBay.
👉 After spending some time with it and making a few lofi beats, I can now tell you what I like about this unusual little sampler — and a few things I definitely don't.
A Sampler That Looks Like a Game Boy
Besides my general love for samplers, one of the first things that attracted me to the SXC-1 was its Game Boy-like form factor. It's tiny, lightweight and looks more like a piece of retro gaming hardware than a conventional music production device. The pads are backlit, and you can customize their colors. Add the pixelated, retro-style numbering printed on them, and the whole thing has a cool nostalgic character that fits the SXC-1's playful aesthetic perfectly.
The pads are thin and remind me somewhat of those found on the Roland SP-404 MKII, but personally I find the SXC-1 pads much nicer to play. They respond well, feel good under the fingers and are surprisingly enjoyable for finger drumming, considering the size of the machine.
Sampling is Fast and Straightforward
The interface is another thing I immediately liked.
Most of the important functions are right there in front of you: PLAY/STOP, REC, ONE SHOT, LOOP, DEL and EDIT. You don't need to dig through menus just to record a sound and start playing with it. Sampling from either USB-C or the analogue mini-jack input is very simple, and there are four sampling methods available:
ReSampling, Auto Trigger, Manual Trigger and Auto Chop.
Between them, they cover most of what I want from a small sampler and make it possible to go from an external sound source to actually making a beat very quickly.

Immediacy clearly seems to have been one of Casio's main priorities with the SXC-1. The official product material emphasizes the same idea: minimal setup, a simple UI and the ability to start creating almost immediately after switching it on.
There's More Hiding Under the Surface
Although the SXC-1 initially looks extremely simple, it actually hides a very welcome advanced feature: the piano-roll sequencer, which reminds me of the one found on the Sonicware SmplTrek, especially because of the similarly compact screen and UI.
You can access the sequencer by holding one of the A, B, C or D bank buttons. It's a feature you could easily miss if you were just playing around with the machine without reading the manual.
I haven't explored it much yet, as I usually record my beats live, but I did use it to slightly move a few notes around to better match the tempo of a beat. That was much quicker and nicer to do compared, for example, to the text-based step sequencer on the Akai MPC Sample, or the even more abstract sequencer found on the Roland SP-404MKII. I actually wish those two bigger-brother samplers would adopt a similar solution.
Two Effects Made for Live Tweaking
One of my favorite parts of making lofi beats on the SXC-1 has been playing with its two global effects sections, FX1 and FX2. I have to say, I really like the way Casio implemented them.
When you turn either FX encoder without engaging the corresponding FX button, you can select the effect you want. You can then activate it by pressing the FX button and manipulate its parameters live with the encoder. Nothing fancy, but it works.
These are the effects available with the original firmware the unit shipped with:
FX 1: Filter, Flanger, Phaser, Bit Crusher
FX 2: Roll 1, Roll 1/2, Roll 1/4, Roll Pattern, Delay 3/4, Delay 3/16

It reminds me somewhat of the way I use effects on the Roland SP-404MKII, although Casio's implementation is obviously much simpler — and that's not necessarily a bad thing.
The whole SXC-1 seems designed around reducing the number of steps between having an idea and actually doing something with it.
Sample editing directly on the hardware is currently fairly basic.
My SXC-1 is still running an earlier firmware, and the editing parameters available to me include Pitch, Volume, Group (Mute Group), Pad Color and BPM. The BPM parameter works together with Casio's Beat Sync system, allowing samples to follow the global tempo.
Holding EDIT instead takes you into the system settings, where you can disable Beat Sync if you'd rather have samples retain their original playback characteristics. You can also adjust things such as the Auto Trigger threshold, pad brightness, display brightness and battery type, check the installed firmware and perform a factory reset.
The pad LEDs can actually get very bright, with several brightness levels available.
Casio has already started expanding the machine through firmware updates. Version 1.2.0, for example, introduced an adjustable PAD SENS parameter that lets you adjust how the pads respond to repeated hits.
This makes me particularly curious to see how far Casio will take the SXC-1 with future updates.

The Companion App Is an Important Part of the Picture
One current frustration with importing the SXC-1 is that the hardware isn't the whole ecosystem. Casio also developed the CASIO Sampler App, which expands what you can do with the machine from a smartphone.
At the time I'm writing this, however, the SXC-1 is still essentially a Japanese-market product, and I haven't been able to install the companion app through the Google Play Store. That means I'm currently judging the SXC-1 largely on what I can accomplish directly from the hardware.
Hopefully, an international launch will also bring proper worldwide availability of the app, because expanding sample management and editing through a smartphone could take the SXC-1 to the next level. I could see it developing into something similar to the Koala Sampler and SP-404MKII ecosystem, although the SP-404MKII itself is much more capable when it comes to advanced sample editing directly on the hardware.
Excellent Connectivity for Such a Tiny Machine
One detail I really appreciate is the positioning of the Input and Main Volume faders on the front. They're always accessible, so adjusting the incoming recording level or the overall playback volume takes seconds. There's also a physical input selector on the side for choosing between Mic, Line and USB as your sampling source.
On the back, things get even more interesting, because Casio has provided two USB-C connections. This is particularly useful when using the SXC-1 with a smartphone: you can have the sampler connected to another device for audio/data while still providing power through the second USB connection.
However, USB audio still seems somewhat unstable in my experience. I've been struggling to get my phone to consistently record audio from the SXC-1 via USB-C while shooting a beat video — first with my Huawei phone, and later with a Google Pixel. I've tried both the phones' native camera apps and Open Camera, which allows you to manually select the audio source.
I managed to get it working a couple of times after several attempts, but eventually gave up and decided to record the audio separately, directly into my MacBook Pro, while using the phone for video only. I then synced the audio and video afterwards.
Considering how useful direct USB audio connectivity with mobile devices could be for the SXC-1's portable workflow, I hope this is something Casio can improve with a future firmware update.

Built-In Mic + Speaker = A Proper Portable Sampler
Unlike the SP-404MKII, where I never really understood Roland's decision to remove the onboard mic found on the older SP-404 samplers, Casio made the right choice by including both a built-in microphone and speaker. The latter is placed on the back of the instrument, and while, as you might expect, it isn't as good as connecting a compact external speaker, it's still a very welcome addition and nice to have for a quick preview. Those features might sound insignificant until you actually start using a sampler away from your studio.
With the SXC-1, you can pick it up, sample something through the internal microphone, make a beat and listen back without connecting anything else. No audio interface. No headphones. No external microphone. That's what makes its tiny size really useful rather than merely impressive.
The SXC-1 feels like something you're actually supposed to throw into a bag and use wherever inspiration happens.

But Why AAA Batteries?
This leads directly to one of the things I really don't like about it: batteries.
For such a modern portable sampler, Casio's decision to use AAA batteries feels awkward to me. From my experience so far, battery life is too short — around one to two hours at best.
Casio's own specifications actually reflect this limitation, quoting approximately two hours with four Panasonic eneloop rechargeable batteries, depending on operating conditions.
For a device whose whole appeal revolves around portability, Casio should have followed Roland's approach with the P-6 Creative Sampler, which uses a rechargeable internal lithium battery that can be quickly charged via USB-C. That would make longer portable beatmaking sessions much more practical.
In my case, I'll probably end up using a compact power bank, which makes much more sense to me than constantly swapping AAA batteries in and out — something I'm already used to with the Sonicware Lofi-12 XT, for instance.
The Output Could Use More Punch
The other significant weakness I've noticed is the overall gain structure.
Both playback and recording levels seem fairly low to me, and beats coming directly from the SXC-1 can lack some of the punch and perceived loudness I'd like.
As of now, there isn't any master compressor or limiter to address this, which I'd say should be a basic feature on any sampler these days.
This isn't necessarily a major problem if you're going to finish your track in a DAW afterwards, but when you're using the SXC-1 as a completely standalone beatmaking machine — especially if you're streaming your beats live through your smartphone — I'd definitely love to have a simple master compressor to glue everything together and give the final output a little more weight.
I hope that's something Casio will address in a future firmware update.
So, is the Casio SXC-1 Worth Waiting For?
Despite those limitations, the SXC-1 has quickly become one of those little machines that simply makes me want to use it, mostly because of its simplicity, portability and fun factor — and for me, that's a hell of a combination for any sampler to have!
The pads feel good, sampling is quick, the sequencer is deeper than it initially appears, and the two FX sections make it possible to actually perform your beats rather than just play them back.
Since I started posting my SXC-1 beats on Instagram, TikTok and other social media platforms, I've also noticed a lot of interest in this little sampler from fellow beatmakers.
Most importantly, it doesn't feel like Casio is simply trying to compete directly with an MPC or SP-404. The SXC-1 has its own identity.
There's also something fitting about seeing the Casio name on a sampler again. Casio itself highlights sounds from classic instruments such as the SK-1 and MT-40 among the SXC-1's factory content, connecting this new machine with the company's long history of inexpensive and experimental music gear.
